Pianofabiek, dance room Zabriski
Program
The traditional dances of Southern Italy, often known by the generic term ‘tarantella’, take on very different names, forms and characteristics depending on the region, area and sometimes even the village of origin, and in some cases have managed to survive the process of standardisation that threatened them.
These are very ancient dances, whose common feature is a highly rhythmic and sustained movement, punctuated by the lively beat of the drum.
During the workshop, we will focus on the pizzica pizzica, a traditional dance from Salento, in the south of Puglia. Its rather complex origins and history are linked, amongst other things, to the phenomenon of healing through dance and music known as ‘tarantismo’. It is a dance for two, characterised on the one hand by precise, codified steps and, on the other, by an ‘improvised’ interaction between the dancers.
Emanuela will also introduce you to one or two group dances from Sicily.
