Stage 'Mazurka… and that’s all!' by Pierre Chesneau
What if the things you’ve always suspected were there – softness, space, musical nuance, playful freedom – were not “mystical gifts”, but skills you can actually build?
In mazurka, it often looks like we’re pulled toward two extremes. On one side, there are the dancers who stay safely inside the base step, solid, faithful, “correct”… and yet secretly wondering where the fun is supposed to happen, what else they’re allowed to do, and how to make the dance feel more alive. On the other side, there are the dancers who chase freedom so hard that they end up improvising almost everything, until, little by little, the dance stops really being a mazurka at all. Plenty of movement, plenty of ideas… but the particular magic that makes this dance tick starts to fade.
If this tension feels familiar, this proposition might just be right for you: a 5-hour deep dive into mazurka, designed to bring a healthy middle ground, with more freedom, and more respect for what makes a mazurka a mazurka. A place to build tools that give you options, without losing the thread. To play more, without dissolving the form; to become expressive, without “escaping” the dance.
Programme
We will explore mazurka from the inside: the musical specificities that shape your choices, the subtle relationship to pulse and phrasing, and the way listening can change the entire quality of your movement. We’ll take time to refine connection, not in the sense of adding tension or control, but by developing a soft, precise, and comfortable dialogue in the couple. We’ll look at how to move through the room with more intelligence and calm, how to use space without rushing or getting trapped, and how improvisation can become playful and rich without becoming messy or random. In other words: we’ll build tools that make the dance clearer, freer, and more enjoyable, both for you and for your partner.
And because mazurka never exists in isolation, we’ll also take a step back and make bridges: how certain qualities in mazurka can be borrowed from other dances, and how what you develop here can be brought back into other couple dances. The goal is not to turn mazurka into a closed “style”, but to sharpen your dancing vocabulary and your sensitivity in a way that travels.
Expect beautiful music, a lot of dancing, and personal feedback! Plus the very real possibility that some of the questions you’ve been carrying for ages finally get an answer!
