Workshop Connection and listening in folk dance – Catarina Ascensão

Time. Space. Each step. The body. Bodies. Intensity. Dynamics. Silence.

Letting things emerge, being attentive to what is already there. Allowing fluidity in the dance, like the flow of a river that never stops.

During this workshop, we explore a primarily subtle approach, listening to oneself, to others, and to the group. We draw upon partner dances and some group dances, as well as tools for improvisation, co-leading, and listening.

Catarina Ascensão

Mother, dancer, teacher, event organizer, doula.

A graduate in contemporary dance and choreography, she spent ten years as a resident teacher, dancer, and choreographer in several schools and theater/dance companies in Portugal, her country of origin. Alongside her artistic career, she explored a holistic approach to movement and touch, particularly during eight years of travel. Today, Catarina lives in Drôme-France, where she runs a retreat center and continues her teaching work.

Catarina discovered folk as a teenager and has been immersed in it ever since.
She co-founded Resitrad – Dionysos à Ciel Ouvert, collaborated with numerous teachers and musicians, and participated in various events in Europe and Asia, where she also taught.

The body, its expression, and the relationships between people are central to her work. She feels  herself when she offers others a space to dance and create. She deeply believes in the natural balance of things. She loves to laugh while dancing and to observe the music of people moving together.
