Yes, yes, the branle béarnais is that line dance that seems so simple… and then you realize it’s not quite that easy. A great challenge for intermediate and advanced dancers! With variations, off-beats, and everything!
Program
In parallel:
If you’re new to this repertoire, the goal of the workshop is to master the basic steps, possibly including a few easy variations. Experienced dancers will be able to review the basics and focus on more complex variations.
During this workshop, we’ll learn both the basic steps and variations of the branle béarnais (also known as the branle de la Vallée d’Ossau) and the rondeau en chaîne simultaneously, so that all dancers are constantly challenged at their own level: while learning the basic steps for dancers new to the branle and the rondeau en chaîne, Koen will offer rhythmic variations for more experienced dancers, starting with easy ones and gradually increasing in difficulty: off-beat steps in various combinations, padam, other movements, stylistic variations…
On the branle béarnais = branle de la Vallée d’Ossau (text: Corbefin Marsac)
In the Ossau Valley, a dance clearly reflects its kinship with the ancient Renaissance branles. It has retained the name “branle” and was performed until the end of the 19th century as a single open chain.
We invite you to discover the Ossau Valley branle in its chain formatio, with its rhythm marked by a tempo that allows the movement to unfold to its full extent, and its distinctive gestures that seem almost suspended in time.
